Leaving Patriarchy Behind: One Woman's Journey
By Leticia Aguilar and Eve Quesnel

Picture
Behind the curtain, midwife Dona Felix at her side, Mama screamed with each contraction, all of us children running about. We didn’t care about the noise; we had heard such shouts of pain before -  every nine months. After each birth Papa would turn to Mama and ask, “Mama, es un niño?” But out of eighteen babies Mama only had four boys.

Snow Fleas and Chickadees: Everyday Observations in the Sierra
By Eve Quesnel, Illustrated by Anne Chadwick

Picture
In nature, I am more present than at any other time, perpetually amazed by what I see. I have stood for hundreds of hours at my kitchen window, binoculars in hand, watching an entire community, regulars and visitors alike dash about. Ten Evening Grosbeaks visit for a month, then suddenly disappear. A coyote jumps in the air to pounce on its next meal. A Black Bear lumbers into our yard, heading towards a flicker’s nest to steal her eggs. Nature is mysterious, hideous, and glorious.
