About Me
I spent my childhood in San Francisco near the Presidio where I ran through Eucalyptus stands and built forts. When older, my friends and I explored the city on our ten speeds, sometimes crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to buy trinkets in the town of Sausalito or hair ribbons from the ribbon shop. While I loved growing up in a big city, I knew I'd eventually move to the mountains.
After a decade of working in outdoor jobs with the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Oregon and Nevada State Parks, and after marrying my husband, I moved to Truckee, CA in the Sierra Nevada mountains. At nine months pregnant, I never could have imagined our daughter, thirty five years later, would have done the same when she was eight months pregnant - move to our humble Sierra community.
With my twenty year hiatus from college behind me, I returned to the University of Nevada in Reno to complete my bachelor's and continue on to obtain my master's. In the Literature and Environment graduate program, I was inspired to teach and then write about the natural world.
I began my writing journey by penning essays in a column called "Nature's Corner" for the local Truckee-Tahoe newspaper Moonshine Ink. While putting my foot into a little bit of journalism, I pursued more lengthy projects. My first book, of which I was co-editor, addressed the brilliant writings of Peter Berg, an environmental pioneer in the Bay Area of California. My second followed a local Mexican woman's journey toward independence. My third, forthcoming in May 2025, includes twenty-one essays on the flora and fauna in the Sierra. All three books have taken the long and winding road to get to their destinations, but in the end they made it to the finish line.
